SBAC supports a fair sales tax via the Marketplace Fairness Act
Many SBAC businesses are struggling because the Illinois sales tax is not presently enforced on internet sales from companies located outside of the state. Accordingly, the SBAC has agreed to support the Marketplace Fairness Act, a federal, bipartisan bill that will allow the State to collect sales tax on out-of-state internet companies.
This legislation grants states the right to ensure that online and catalog retailers, no matter where they are located, collect sales tax at the time of a transaction – exactly like local retailers are already required to do.
The legislation will not impact businesses whose on-line sales do not exceed $500,000. This will also not create a new tax. Rather, this will level the playing field for Illinois retailers.
The SBAC has already begun forming a coalition of local businesses to join our efforts. For more information about the coalition or to join, contact Blanca Campos at email@example.com.
