advocacy. Communication is key to relaying our message to our membership. We
send out a number of newsletters a month to each chapter, community and for

Events to Engage In

Thursday our Young Professionals Group is hosting karaoke/networking
happy hour at Trader Todd’s just north of downtown Chicago. Whether you are
young or professional or a little bit of both feel free to join us for a fun
mix of song and networking.

Next Tuesday, on June 23rd, the Edgewater Chamber
of Commerce and SBAC has teamed up to bring you Edgewater Pitch Fest. Join us
to see four of Chicago’s young entrepreneurs pitch their companies. The
audience can live tweet questions and will vote to help select a winner. Don’t
miss out on your chance to see some of Chicago’s rising stars.

Advocacy Update

The Intrastate Equity Crowdfunding bill has been passed in
both the House & Senate unanimously! The Governor will has 60 days to sign
the bill into law from its initial passing. If the Governor does not sign the
bill in that 60 days it automatically
becomes a law.

5/25 Talking Points

Dear Advocates,

A lot of great events ahead of us for the last week of May and the month of June. We are ending May with a venture pitch session at Level Office in downtown Chicago. Join us to see four companies looking to grow pitch to a panel of judges and the audience. The audience will vote to help decide a winner.

In June we will have our Mid-Year Real Estate Forecast. This is the perfect opportunity to build your referral network, gain new relationships, and learn about the trends that are being seen in real estate and construction. This special one-time event will feature three dynamic SBAC groups: the Residential Real Estate Community, Construction Community, and Commercial Real Estate Community.

Also in June, the SBAC is having a Happy Hour at the Swedish Covenant Hospital. Join us for updates on our upcoming Health Expo and Business Event, the SBAC Healthcare Marketplace and Wellness Community. Mark Newton, the CEO of the Swedish Covenant Hospital, will also be there to welcome everyone.

Advocacy Update

The Intrastate Equity Crowdfunding bill has been passed in both the House & Senate unanimously! The bill awaits the governor’s signature to become a law.
On June 1st and 2nd, we will be joining small business owners from across the country in Washington, D.C. We will have the opportunity to hear about key small business issues from policy experts and lawmakers. Our group will also meet with White House officials, share breakfast with influential Members of Congress, and make important Hill visits.

5/10 Talking Points

Dear SBAC leader,

Although the weather this weekend suggested otherwise, summer is upon us. Please check out the what we have planned in the upcoming weeks and months.

Advocacy- The final push for Crowdfunding! We will be sending the team down to Springfield again this week to continue our push to make access to capital for small businesses a less burdensome reality! Stay tuned as we will send out calls to action if necessary, we are always looking to strengthen our coalition, if you know any Chamber or Association Directors or CEO’s, please connect us so we can get them on board!

5/4 Talking Points

Dear SBAC leaders

I hope you enjoyed the beautiful weather this weekend. Always nice to get outside and take in some sunshine.

Advocacy- We are in the final push to get this intrastate equity crowdfunding bill passed into law. We need Senate co-sponsors, district advocates and the entire membership to execute our call to actions to make this happen. Keep your eyes open for the call to actions in the upcoming weeks.

Events- Pitch Session May 28th, Golf Outing August 10th, New Health Expo and Business Event November 10th. These are all being planned and built on from great events last year.

New website, the finishing touches are being worked on with the new website. we are making sure the events pages and membership directory are working as good as we can get them working, before we roll it out.

4/27 Talking Points

Advocacy: So much to update everyone on!!! There are many opportunities to engage and so much the SBAC is involved in:

In the City, the SBAC is working with the CLA (Chicago Leadership Allicance) and the IEJ (Insitute for Entrepreneurial Justice) to make the process for applying to get proper signage for your business more efficient.

The SBAC along with the Jewish B2B sent over 30 advocates to Springfield to discuss the current legislation we have in the session. We are optimistic about moving the Crowdfunding initiative forward

The SBAC Policy Committee meets the last Monday of the month at the Parthenon, if you would like to get involved or just would like to see the grassroots advocacy efforts take shape from the ground floor, let us know ans we will send you an invite.

Events- Make sure to look for Chapter, Community, and Signature events in your area for May, among the fun….SBACNow Venture Pitch session May 28th. Come and mingle and watch 4 young companies compete for prizes You get a say in who wins, and food and beverage included. Always a good time.

Golf Outing- August 10th, if you are looking to attend, sponsor, volunteer, or just hang out at the club, start planning for a fund day. The info is all up on the events page on the website. It is sure to be a great time!

4/20 Talking Points


We are extremely excited to announce that HB 3429, which will bring intrastate equity crowdfunding to Illinois, was brought to the floor of the House this morning, voted on and passed unanimously! The bill will now move to the Senate.

February 9th 2015 Talking Points

We are looking forward to some amazing events in the upcoming months. February 12th is our first quarterly pitch session. Four companies in search of funding and advice will pitch to a prestigious panel of judges. The event will include Keynote Speaker Mark Lawrence, Co-Founder & CEO of Spothero. Tickets are still available and can be purchased through eventbrite. Tickets include exclusive tours of Level Office, appetizers, beverages (alcoholic/nonalcoholic), and networking with other investors, venture capitalist, advisors. and small business owners.

In April join us for our Annual Advocacy Awards Dinner on April 10th and the Chicago Cultural Center. Earlybird tickets are on-sale until March 31st and can be purchased by going on to our events calendar. We still have sponsorship and volunteer opportunities available. The SBAC has a robust legislative agenda this year in Springfield focusing on lowering LLC fees (which are among the highest in the nation), ensuring that all Illinois businesses play on a level playing field when it comes to taxes, eliminating duplicative bonding requirements for contractors and bringing intrastate equity crowdfunding to Illinois. With a growing membership base, spanning over 78 of the 118 House Districts and 42 of the 59 Senate Districts, the SBAC can have a strong hand in improving Illinois’ fiscal condition and changing the narrative in our state.

For folks interested in actively engaging in our advocacy efforts, become a District Advocate. District Advocates serve as SBAC liaisons to their elected officials. By forming permanent relationships with our government officials, we can more successfully address the political issues that impact the small business community. As we enter the 2nd week of 2015, the SBAC is extremely excited about the mission we are on to make Illinois a better place for Small Business.

Our advocacy awards dinner is set for Friday, April 10th at the Cultural Society. We are looking for help with anyone that would like to volunteer to help with registration and being on the welcoming committee for the dinner.
