The Chicago Bar Association Young Lawyers Section will host a committee meeting on Tuesday, July 24, 2012 at 12:15 p.m. at the CBA Headquarters, 321 S. Plymouth Court (ask security guard in lobby for meeting room location).

The CBA YLS welcomes Craig Morris, Managing Attorney for Trademark Outreach with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Mr. Morris is traveling to Chicago from Washington D.C. in an effort to spread the word about aggressive litigation tactics and how small and independent business owners can take the necessary prevention steps to avoid these costly and expensive battles. He will start from the ground up–advising business owners about their Intellectual Property assets and the importance of obtaining proper protection for trademarks, copyrights, patents, domain names and trade names. He will then delve into trademark protection and how conscientious and thoughtful preparation in choosing business and brand names can provide the best protection down the road. In this discussion, Mr. Morris will advise on: i) how to identify potential grounds the USPTO may have to refuse federal registration of trademarks; ii) the importance of conducting complete and accurate searches prior to choosing marks; iii) when hiring a trademark attorney is necessary; and iv) how to avoid scams perpetrated by companies unaffiliated with the USPTO. Finally, Craig will discuss protection tactics that every business owner should be aware of to avoid losing their trademark rights throughout the life of their growing businesses.
Craig Morris is a Managing Attorney for Trademark Outreach with the United States Patent & Trademark Office.
