Success and Balance in Life

How do you define success? What are some of the words that come to mind if you think about the idea of success? How about happiness, recognition, contentment, money, accomplishment, self-fulfillment and I am sure you can think of others. Here is a definition that we use and I would like you to consider: success is a progressive realization of worthwhile, predetermined personal goals.

Success is progressive — ongoing, dynamic, a journey — not a destination. Progressive means that you are successful as soon as you set a goal and begin working on it. Success comes not when you reach a goal, but as soon as you take action towards its accomplishment.

Success means realization. This means that you are actually accomplishing goals. You just don’t set goals, you are realizing them.

Success means your goals are worthwhile. You might ask, “Worthwhile to whom?” Well, first of all, worthwhile to you. Your goals might also be worthwhile to other people you care about and they must be worthwhile in that they do not violate any laws.

Your goals must be predetermined. Basically this means we must think about our goals and plan for them. You need to know where you will be a year, three years, and five years from now. And predetermined suggests that you decide what your goals will be; they’re not chosen for you by someone else.

Your goals are personal. They must be your goals. When you work to achieve someone else’s goals, you are not as motivated as when you work to reach your own. The key is awareness of your goals and what you want and why.  Truly successful people are capable of generating self-motivation because they are able to link the achievement of their business goals to an important personal goal.

And finally the word goals. Your goals must be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic andtangible — and encompass every area of your life:  Family, Financial/Business, Mental, Physical, Social and Spiritual/Ethical. 

Success is goal-directed action. So if you have goals and are working toward them, then you are successful. Can you relate to this definition? Sometimes people fail to recognize how important it is to have goals, particularly written goals in every area of their life. It is how balance can be created and sustained.
