Property Taxes Agenda

Illinois has the nation’s highest effective property tax rate. Property taxes place a huge burden on small business owners and their employees. In Chicago, recent property tax increases have hit residents in disinvested communities the hardest, damaging the revitalization of commercial corridors. One reason property taxes are so high is that Illinois has more units of government than any other state. The costs associated with fragmented and overlapping layers of government translate into higher property taxes.

Data-Driven Consolidation Act

Transparency and data analytics will help policymakers and constituents make informed decisions about government consolidation. Legislation should be passed to create and adequately fund a Division of Analytics and Consolidation in the Office of the Comptroller.

Citizens Empowerment Act

As the constituents of local government and the recipients of local services, citizens are in the best position to determine the public services that are worthy of their tax dollars. Legislation should be passed that allows citizen-led referenda to consolidate units of local government.
